HeadRush Encourages Students to Get Involved

Hispanic Heritage Month kicked off its third day with the energetic headRush crew Wednesday night.

As they took the stage, they brought street theater and took the audience on a journey of a young man struggling for "true democracy."

Students grabbed their seats in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium as Rosa Esperanza González, Simón Adinia Hanukai and Luis "Xago" Juárez joined together to form headRush crew, a group performance full of psycho-politico spoken word and popular education.

From the consequences of being an inner-city youth to the manipulation in Homeland Security over the U.S./Mexico border, the group covered controversial problems regarding the treatment and discrimination of some ethnicities.

Juárez said the presentation was a successful beginning to their tour.

"It went great; it was a celebration for us being five years together this month, and a great kickoff to our tour for 'true' democracy," he said.

This tour will include a dialogue on participatory democracy for the 2008 Presidential Election.

Aside from their portrayals of issues regarding minorities, they also were able to draw in the crowd and push toward the topic of voting. The auditorium echoed as students were asked to yell, "Whose House? Our House," symbolizing that no matter who lives in the White House, all Americans govern the United States.

Saginaw freshman Rodney Austin, the secretary for the Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, which co-sponsored the event, thought one of the group's most effective messages was voting.

"An effective message was to vote, and also, don't let corporate America tell you how to live your life," he said.
