Hispanic Heritage Month kicked off its third day with the energetic headRush crew Wednesday night.
As they took the stage, they brought street theater and took the audience on a journey of a young man struggling for "true democracy."
Students grabbed their seats in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium as Rosa Esperanza González, Simón Adinia Hanukai and Luis "Xago" Juárez joined together to form headRush crew, a group performance full of psycho-politico spoken word and popular education.

What would downtown San Jose look like if a bunch of creative kids designed it from scratch?
Forget high-rise glass boxes.
Forget massive parking garages.
Picture a huge central park with a roller coaster that's also a mass-transit system. An outdoor movie theater and an art museum where you can make your own art. Fanciful rchitecture, energy-efficient buildings and lots of roof gardens.

The Avalancha Cultural de la Carpa del FEO (Fandango in East Oakland) was organized by the dynamic trio of headRush (Rosa Gonzalez, Luis Xago Juarez, Simon Hanukai; visit them at: www.headrushcrew.com) with Hector Rangel, who directs Libros, Arte y Cultura (www.librosarteycultura.com), a new bookstore that Centro Legal de La Raza helped open at the new Oakland Workers Center, at the corner of 25th Avenue and International Boulevard (formerly East 14th Street!). [Photo left: Shadow of papel picado hanging across the Placita.] headRush organized three Saturdays of street theater and community performance starting on Saturday, May 3, with the theme of the day being PEACE; then the following Saturday, May 10, NO BORDERS. Hundreds of persons were treated to dynamic cultural performances with vision and community grounding.
